FAQs on Starting a Life Story | Chapterscrolls

Welcome to Chapterscrolls!

A chapter is a contained story of your life that is about the length of a chapter in a book.

Your chapter will be roughly 3000-4000 words long. That's about 6-8 pages long, single-spaced, in Word.

The initial story-telling session will take approximately one hour to complete. Your chapter will be delivered in 2-4 weeks. Beyond that, how much time you would like to spend revising it is up to you.

Of course! We want your memory to be captured without blemishes. After the initial draft is completed, we will send it to you to read and review. There will be a follow-up phone call, during which we will go over the entire piece to discuss necessary changes. Once changes are made, you will have another change to review and confirm. Even after your chapter has been posted, you may contact us anytime if you want to adjust anything. (After it has posted, minor changes will be made free of charge. Additional charges may apply if you want large sections re-written.)

The initial draft would be available between 2-4 weeks. Subsequent drafts will depend on the amount of changes to make.

Please feel free to schedule a consult if you're unsure, but as an initial piece of advice, if it's a story you've never told anyone before, imagine sitting with a friend in a café. Can you see yourself telling him/her the story right then and there in one sitting? If it's not a one-sitting type of story, then it's likely too long. Try breaking it up into smaller sections if you want them recorded as standard chapters, or if you want it all together in one piece, contact us to ask about options for longer chapters.

You will have a buffer of 15 extra minutes beyond the hour to finish your story. If you think you can finish, then please go ahead and use the buffer time. If you don't think you can finish, you can discuss options with your scribe, such as ending the story at a different point or adding an additional chapter.

Run the story through your head. Think about how it started, progressed, and ended. This would help to shape things in your mind and help with the flow of the storytelling. Sometimes, taking notes of key points beforehand and having them laid out in front of you as you tell your story would help to jog your memory as you go.

Details are key! Small things such as the weather, colors, textures, and thoughts you had at the moment, all contribute to the wholeness of your story and help bring it to life.

It's completely up to you. First-person narration might sound more natural, since that is the way you're telling the story, but some people might find it strange to read about themselves in first-person. Third-person works fine as well. Just let us know your preference!

You don't have to, but if you do have supplementary materials such as photos or notes, feel free to send them along to your scribe! Any extra information would help to pad up your story and give it more life.

Yes, we understand that some memories may become muddled over time and will do our best to fact check the contents of your story if needed.

It's usually better to have one main storyteller, but if you can't remember everything and want to include another person's input as well, please make sure to coordinate beforehand so that the story is told without too many disagreements. Sometimes, if different peoples' versions of the same story have too many disparities, it might be better to write them out as separate chapters altogether rather than trying to merge them into one.
